Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reminder to price in risk. All too often I've priced the project on exactly what the client and I discussed, without factoring in any surprises.

Great post!!
We've been moving away from "websites" and toward speaking to an "online marketing platform" solution. In almost every instance prospects who think they only want a website really want a number of other components to help them market their business. We discuss this simple map with them to help them see the various components: http://cl.ly/1x1u2X2G2414
I can't recall a time where someone said they didn't want a particular component (email, analytics, etc)

What this does is help them see how a "rough estimate" is so difficult to quote and how what they really want is a complete solution where a website is a component (maybe the hub) of the solution. I've found this greatly helps frame a discussion for a paid discovery session.

I've been calling my website worksheet a "Website Project Planner". I'm thinking now of calling it an "Application" and the next step, if their application is approved, is to insist on a paid discovery/planning stage.

Thank you for taking the time to answer this Chris. I feel like that question "How much does a website cost?" is the most infamous question at times because normally a bad quote follows.

I have been working to add a roadmapping (discovery) session to my regular workflow so clients can get a glimpse at my work and also receive a roadmap and quote of what to expect next. Glad I have been thinking about the right things here.

Nice post Chris. One question - I didn't see project management time in your list - is that something you built in to the figures in your example? I always like to add this (even if it's only for me to calculate a ball park).
