Great points Simon, and so happy to see you've jumped all over this talking thing with so much enthusiasm. Hope to see you at WordCamp Sydney in September.

Brilliant stuff Cath. I recently did my first presentation in at the Gold Coast WP meet up and these pointers definitely came in handy!

The crew at the Gold Coast WordPress meet up were super supportive (thanks again!) and really made it easy for me. Since then I've talked at a meet up double the size and now I'm presenting a workshop at two other ticketed events. Hopefully speaking at WordCamp Sydney too, we'll see!

One thing I did for my own mindset was not tell the audience it was my first time presenting until after the presentation. I just didn't want that to be what anyone was thinking about during the talk.

Talking to the audience BEFORE the talk was a really good ice breaker. Then when I started talking it really wasn't that much different to normal conversation.

I also kicked off the talk with a question to the audience which put me at ease a lot - "who here sells things on their website?"... "Who would like to sell MORE of things things from their website?". It helped me to get some people to say "yes" to kick off the talk :)

One last tip I would have it to just DO IT. You'll always be scared of it, but it is an awesome experience, a really good skill to have and a great way to meet new people.
