101 Ways to Elevate – #53 Best Practices

Number fifty-three: Best Practices

Good day, I'm Troy Dean from video user manuals and Agency Mavericks and this is the 101 Ways to Elevate Yourself and Demand Higher Fees: A practical guide for WordPress consultants to start attracting better quality clients, work on better, more interesting projects and get paid better fees. Now, let's go elevate.

Number 53: Best Practices. So, while we're working with a client, maybe I might even do this before I send of the proposal or once we're in the project, I'll email them some links to websites that we follow that give us best practices on launching websites and developing websites. This is an old article on this website here. I think it might have been on Smashing Magazine, “15 Essential Checks Before Launching Your Website”.

It's basic stuff like making sure your favicon is in place, making sure you've got Apple touch icons in place. Spelling, grammar checks, broken link checks, make sure the paths to all your images are updated from the development server to the live server, all those kind of fundamental things.

But what I like to do is e-mail our clients and say “Hey, just thought I'd let you know these are the best practices that we're adopting. This is who's recommending it, this is kind of industry standard and we're across all this stuff and no need to worry, you're in safe hands, we read this stuff on a regular basis and just wanted to let you know what we're up to as part of our process.”

What this does is it positions you as someone who's an expert in your field and who's constantly learning and constantly studying to stay at the forefront of technology and what's happening. It's just a nice way to keep nurturing that relationship with the client even when you're in the middle of developing a project with them.

So, highlight that you follow best practices and show your client what those best practices are. In the next video, I'm going to talk about our favorite friend: scope creep. Until then, go elevate.
