This is our very first live-recording of the WP Elevation podcast – possibly the first ever live recording of any WordPress podcast! We feature Melbourne boy Elliot Condon from ACF. He talks about how the business came about and includes some gold nugget tips along the way. Tune in to find out why this inspiring guy prefers the ‘journey’ to the ‘destination’…
Elliot is sponsoring this weeks prize of a brand-new ACF 5 developer license valued at $100. All you need to do is tell us the most interesting or the most complex website you've ever built with ACF. Leave a link so we can check it out.
Congratulations Gustao! Elliot has awarded you the prize! August 2014

First, great interview. Elliot has this kind of “I’m just a farmer like you” approach to express his thoughts ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfvz7kteHTY ). I like it.
Here is a site under development using ACF along with WP All Import to dynamically post custom products. Nothing fancy just a good ol’ fashion website. 🙂 I’d really like to win this one if I qualify.
Best regards,

Great interview!
My most complex website built with ACF: http://www.desapegoconsciente.org (a social good and non-profit initiative)
So nice to getting to know the-guy-behind-the-code 🙂 and some great tips too. Thanks Elliot! My best use of ACF would be a custom built site for a Cape Town art gallery – http://barnardgallery.com/
The client is able to add, edit and manage their artists, artworks, exhibitions, art fairs, publications, reviews, and awards with ease – as well as a private showroom for potential buyers – all interlinked using ACF’s post object and relationship fields. In fact ACF makes the process SO client-friendly that they hardly ever phone me any more 🙂
Awesome interview. Loving all the podcasts but was excited about this one because ACF changed my WP workflow massively. So many thanks to Elliot. I use it every single day! I’ve made loads of sites with ACF but this is one of my favs: http://thecreativefringe.com.au/ The client can add their social media links throughout the site, choose each color for the pages, the pre-footer sections with icons and text/links, the locals page is all with ACF, as is the ‘shop’ page, not to mention the homepage slider, inner page headers (image banner and tagline) and the contact page interactive google maps.
Without ACF, this site would have taken a lot longer to code, and it’s such a breeze for my client to use. Thanks again
Awesome interview. I love that Elliot is so humble yet his product is so huge.
Along with a couple of other guys, we built http://www.ellebelleuk.com/ which is a female health supplement e-commerce store, with ACF.
Even though it’s live we’re constantly plugging away at it, and it’s easily the largest site we’ve done on ACF.
Elliot makes some great points about focusing on the product and making that stand out rather than using marketing hype. If ACF did get folded into core, then the next Elliot project would easily get my attention anyway.
Well done guys – nicely done with some great info.
A couple of recent custom WP projects include a Multisite network for Mazda dealers in Australia, with custom fields covering image galleries, repeaters, colour pickers etc. bendigomazda.com.au is the first dealer site running on the network.
Another is theroundabout.com.au, a list listing / selling disability / accessibility items – much like Gumtree but different, using ACF for the front end forms as well.
Then there’s a dealer network extranet not yet launched, but basically a front-facing system for project management, CRM and document management – all ACF front and back.
Thanks again guys 🙂
Great Job Troy as allways –
The most complicated project I have used ACF 4.3.0 on has to be http://bviyachtcharters.com. I have six different custom post types all using custom fields, one of them being yachts. The user interface needs to be able to select or filter an archive query of yachts based on data items definitely NOT in the standard WP DB. This is where I found ACF.
One of the nicest features of ACF that you didn’t touch on in the interview is how easy it is to pull ACF data and use it on page templates. If you look at http://www.bviyachtcharters.com/british-virgin-islands/bvi-catamarans/ you will see the key features and pricing all come from ACF fields – not to mention the archive is defined by catamarans located in the BVI – both also ACF.
The sidebar selection of catamarans also relies heavily on data in the ACF. It is showing all catamarans in the BVI sorted by price high->low. This is a plugin I wrote to make this happen (I humbly admit I’m NOT a plugin developer) The performance of this really surprised me. I assumed the performance of the get_fields would really drag since ACF is a bolt on plugin. Just the contrary. It is blazingly fast. Just as fast as any other WP field.
The design or layout was handled by their internal designer, I built the CPT, ACF and plugins to make the archives work. Sometimes the desires and designs of the client make these projects tough – good thing ACF made quick work of lots of it!
Some sites I developed with ACF, somehow ordered from most complex:
