Woo Subscriptions

Welcome to the WP Elevation Podcast, Episode 28. Our featured guest this week is Brent Shepherd, a fellow Australian living in San Francisco, who is the developer of the Woo Subscriptions extension which allows you to have customers subscribe to a recurring monthly product using WooCommerce. It is a premium extension and he has built a nice company out of building this extension for WooCommerce. In this episode, you’re going to learn how Brent made the transition from a freelance web dev into a WP product company.

Show Notes

This week’s highlights include:

  • WP Elevation Tip of the Week: Don’t write prototypes. Why not just build a rapid prototype in WordPress or use the Canvas Theme on Woo Themes to build a rapid prototype to show the client what we’re building instead of trying to explain it in words
  • I asked Brent about writing proposals and he said “Well in a perfect world, you don’t want to be writing proposals because if you’re writing proposals, then you’re probably competing with other developers and it’s going to come down to price and who the customer believes is best suited for the job”

  1. Great interview! – What I would use WooCommerce Subscriptions for? I sell organic tea and I think we have a lot of customers who would drink our teas every day all year, but never get around to the second and third order. I want to turn them into Tea Subscribers 🙂

  3. As a tea drinker, I love that idea Mats! I’ve seen a few great coffee sites using Subscriptions, but no tea stores. If you ship to North American, I might even be your first subscriber. 🙂

I use WooSubscriptions to sell a monthly service checking clients’ WordPress sites for possible weaknesses in their security. I also used it on a client site where she sells access to a collection of craft patterns (along with WooCommerce and the Groups extension).

  6. I’d use WooCommerce Subscriptions for a member’s learning website on nutrition and health in my native language. Good way to show Woocommerce Subscriptions wide range of uses in my case. I’d love winning a copy. My email is dan_grr*at*yahoo*dot*com

I will use Woo Subscriptions for a business I’ll soon be at starting with my son. It is a guitar video tuition service and we will be offering it on a monthly subscription. So this would be a perfect solution for us.

I’ll use Woo Subscriptions for a German language WordPress teaching site. Love that it’s not hooked to a certain third party gateway.
