Matt Report

In Episode #2 of the WP Elevation podcast I decided to reach out to the host of the other WordPress podcast that focuses on business. Matt Medeiros from the Matt Report. Sadly my Internet connection makes Matt look like a bad animation but the interview is full of gold. Plus, we’re giving away some cool prizes.

  1. LOL, almost a case of who has the biggest microphone… lol

Great Podcast, really, really enjoyed it.

I was going to say I want to learn how to get one of those microphones, but seriously if I could learn how to systemise my business processes and especially the project management aspect so that it ran much more smoothly, I think I’d marry you.

  2. Had a great time on the show Troy — thanks for having me!

  3. I agree great podcast Troy.

I’d really like it if you could discuss how one effectively communicates what you are and aren’t going to do as part of a project – i.e. how to avoid scope slippage. I find things go haywire when it comes to building functionality into a site. The common thing I get is… “But I thought that would be included, surely that’s standard and it’s obvious we’d need that”

Also love to learn about what tools people are using and plugins. Both paid and free alternatives.

Toying with the idea of joining your WP Elevation group at the mo.

    Keep up the good work!
    – Toby

  4. Toby, I’m a member of WP Elevation and it’s the best money I have ever spent, and most certainly invested in me and my business. I’ve already started attracting better clients, one of which I am hopeful of closing this week… however the real gem of WP Elevations is the members forums, some real gems of information in there and some awesome members going above and beyond to share and help each other.

  5. Troy Dean says:

Aw shucks – thanks for the kind words Steve. You know the program would not be what it is without the willingness and participation of all you members.

Seeing you guys implement and get some runs on the board makes it all worthwhile.

    Now, go elevate 🙂

    Hey Toby,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. One strategy that might help you manage scope creep is to start building things in the browser as quickly as possible.

It’s much easier to have a conversation and get on the same page with a client if you are looking at something in a browser rather than reading a document and trying to imagine it.

A few years ago I started charging to build interactive prototypes which could then be used to quote on a finished product.

I hope that gives you something to think about.

And I hope business is good.

  7. Great podcast guys, really informative.

The big thing I want to learn is how to become the go-to website guy within a given industry. When a business owner in a specific niche needs a website, I want them to hire me because I know their industry and I can build them a great site. And that will bring them more business.

  8. As a newly established business the podcasts are a great support in terms of learning structure and processes. The main thing I want to learn is how to grow my business, keep myself and business at the forefront of web & WP standards.

Loving the show Troy. Keep up the good work.

  9. Matthew Snider says:

What I want to gain from listening to all of the business podcasts out there is a true to myself business plan. Keep it real for who I am as Matthew, and who I want my team to be one day.

I want to gain an understanding on how to do it right the first time, while listening and taking to heart what other folks have struggled with before me.

  10. What I like to hear about is what particular tools people are using for their business. Stuff that keeps them productive, programs they use to systematize their business, etc.

On a sidenote, I would love to see you interview Glenn Allsopp of viperchill.com. He always gives out great information on what’s working now.

  11. The one thing I love to learn by listening to business podcasts is what the podcaster or person being interviewed wished they had known or wish they had done when they first started.

    Great interview, guys. Thanks!

  12. Troy Dean says:

Congratulations Matthew, you’ve been chosen by Matt as the winner of the contest. We’ll be in touch soon with details of your prize – a premium theme of your choice from Slocum Studios and a lifetime license of the Video User Manuals plugin.

    Thanks for participating.

  13. Matthew Snider says:

Matt Medeiros. Why am i getting dozens of automated emails from you which seem to be auto generated using software which creates random email addresses and changes the first part of the address?

Clearly, you are involved in large scale email spamming.

    Example:

I thought you may be interested in seeing how one of our customers used WordPress to explore new revenue opportunities and create an app:

    http://slocumstudio.com/case-studies/guideri/

    http://slocumstudio.com/case-studies/cambridge-dot-com/

I’d like to chat with you about your site. Your reply with just a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ will be much appreciated. Will only take 10 minutes.
