Design for Hackers

David Kadavy wrote an epic blog post to try and get a speaking spot at SXSW and instead landed himself a book deal with Wiley to write Design for Hackers (which went on to debut at #18 on all of Amazon). In this episode we talk about the Tango and Salsa dancing, Tim Ferriss, Fancy Hands, Blogging and of course, Comic Sans.

  1. This episode with David Kadavy has been unbelievably valuable. As a freelance web/graphic designer for the past 9 years, I took this as a thunderbolt of vigor to kickstart my belief in myself and that I am on the right path. Thank you!

  3. I began my professional life in marketing, and have worked with a lot of designers in my day. I’m also a language person, so what I’d get from a better understanding of design is the language to help me translate the meaning and importance of good design to clients. Thanks Troy and David for a great conversation. Definitely time well spent to watch and listen.

I really enjoyed this interview…thanks David and Troy! I’ve been on David’s list for a long time now and I’ve always been intimidated by his knowledge, but it’s nice to know that he suffers from the same perfection paralyzation affliction that I have. I’ve always had a very innate eye for design and have taken very few design and composition courses, but I think that reading more about it would help me be more confident in my work. I do love learning lots of new things and it’s fun to hear from other folks who are of a similar mind. (BTW, I used to line dance a LOT, like 4 nights a week, and fell out of it, but am looking at some line dance classes the city is offering this winter…) I’m going to bookmark this interview for another listen. Thanks again!

I’ve been getting David’s lessons in my inbox for ages, and I always enjoy them (even though I am a designer not a developer). I soak up everything I can learn about design, because I’m completely self taught. And I’m aiming to be the best designer in the world. The more I read and learn, the better I can communicate with my clients and my developer about the reasons behind my design choices.

  10. Loved this episode. A ton of great insight.

I teach various music marketing courses via Berklee College of Music’s online extension. Most of my days are spent teaching musicians how to optimize all their digital touch points (website, social network profiles, ad creatives, etc). One of the big parts of that is improving the visual aspect of all those items.

Would love to win a copy of David’s book. A better understanding of design will help me be a better teacher as I’d be able to better critique, guide, and improve the visual assets of my students/clients and help them build sustainable careers through their efforts to engage with their fans and sell more music and merch.
